As there are no guarantees what the weather will do I think you would be better on a coach tour.New Zealand weather is very unpredictable, but in winter the South Island can have heavy snow, and poor driving conditions. References : Gail

as you are from overseas and don’t no our road . i would sat go by coach..and our winter not that harsh ,,, maybe a bit of snow in queenstown in august ,,but we drive with chains on the cars in snow ,, it clear up in a day or 2 ,,ch ch has very little or no snow in winter ,, dunedin possible… References :
Yes, there will be snow ice etc. I do reccommend to travel by coach, but if you do drive yourself, you may want to keep the following link.
The roads in sheltered areas might be affected by frost but there are often signs telling you where those areas are.
The icy areas are also indicated.
Snow does not occur often….there may be 1-2 snow storms in areas where you drive. Usually the snow is gone after a day.
Heavy rainfall may occur in some areas but that will depend on what weather is hitting us at the time…..a lot of areas tend to be calm and clear over winter ( or at least it is on much of the east coast of the south island….in fact the west coast has less rain in the winter than in the spring!)
The climate in NZ is not like continental places as we are more oceanic so we do not get as hot or cold and its quite variable over an area. Usually bad weather is not more than 1-2 days and just hope that you will get a clear run! References :
For your own safety and the safety of other drivers, I believe it would best if you travel with a tour group or coach as you will have an experienced driver who knows the roads and weather conditions very well… References : Thats just my opinion…
