Questions about a trip to New Zealand, Ok my Ma is planning on landing in Christchurch and renting an RV?
And driving to Auckland, she is wondering if it’s worth her while to even do this because the travel agent is quoteing a very high cost for the RV rential, if anyone knows a reasonable company to rent from that would be cool. Is traveling in an RV a good way to see New Zealand? Is it safe, is it easy for parking and driveing around there? I am trying to get an idea from maybe someone who has done this and has any advice we don’t know, thanks so much for your imput.
Hi
From my experience the largest motor home rental company is Maui http://www.maui.co.nz/. There are quite a few other companies mentioned above. Rates and quality of the vehicles do vary. The prices are definitely more expensive during our summer and slightly off season much better deals are available.
One piece of advice I will give is to be aware. In country areas the hours of many of the businesses are restricted, this caught many tourists out. Many of the tourists I spoke with said they wished they had allocated more time for the South Island of New Zealand.
Most people travelling by motor home seemed happy. Hope your Ma has a great trip to New Zealand.

For ten years I ran a service station on the main tourist route from Christchurch to Queenstown so decided to put forward some of my experience – http://www.christchurchnewzealandaccommodation.com
Campervans could be a good way to see the country. People do tend to drive them slowly here as the roads are not wide, often gravel off the main roads and frequently windy….however you can take your home with you and don’t have to worry so much about finding a bed to sleep.
There are quite a few companies I think… here are a few more in addition to the ones already given and the last two are good for looking at places to go and things to see etc

Campervan touring is popular in NZ and I reccommend to stay at the Top 10 Holiday Parks

Most of New Zealand would be safe, but of coarse like anywhere you need to be carefull about where you stay etc. Parking in the bigger cities might be more difficult but i see campers parked up all over the place in tourist destinations and smaller cities/towns.
Good luck and enjoy New Zealand when you come here

you can try http://www.motorhomerentalsnz.co.nz/ they are based in CHCH also which will be handy for her, they also have an accomodation tab on that site so should list places she can park up for the night. NZ is generally a pretty safe country to travel around, only advise is just use your common sense really, make sure she keeps her doors locked at night as you could anywhere.
