  1. Hi. Another option is to just rent a car and stay in motels. There are a big range of motels at varying prices which provide great facilities. Often this option can work out less expensive or about the same as a camper van. It sounds good to have a camper van and just be able to stop when you want but there are many places where you can not just stop on the side of the road so by the time you add camp ground fees each night the price goes up. You can look on the Motel Association web site http://www.manz.co.nz for a list of association members, facilities and prices.
Hope you have a great holiday. It is a beautiful country and you should enjoy yourselves.

  2. For accomodation you cannot really beat JASONS guide. Free in NZ from advertisers who are listed and about $10nz from bookshops.

Since we don’t know where you are in the world try a good bookshop – in the UK – Stanfords in Covent Garden is the best.

Base backpackers in Christchurch is ok, with a shuttle service to the airport going from outside. It is in Cathedral square in C’ch

In auckland, I would highly recommend the Nomads fat camel hostel just off queens street

  4. I believe that the cheapest van rental would be wicked vans, a rental company that is in both OZ and NZ. The rear has a bed in it, that you can get into from the side door, and there is a cooking set in the rear. You could go with a larger van (one that has an elevated or pop top roof), or a full size camper, but they will cost more. Wicked’s are smaller and generally a good competitive price for backpackers. Furthermore, I believe that you can go one way with them, from Auckland to Christchurch. Finally, all the vans are custom painted, which makes them fun.

There are likely cheaper options, either buying for some of the standby places, but if you’ve got hard dates of travel, you may not have the flexibility necessary for these options.

In terms of hostels in Auckland and Christchurch, there are several. BASE is a hostel chain that runs decent hostels with bars attached. They’re tidy though on the larger end of hostels with over 100 beds. However, they are in the downtown area on both cities. If you’re looking for something smaller, or quieter, I’d look at staying in one of the suburbs, but I couldn’t recomend anything off hand.
